How Extreme Scaffolding delivered a secure marine platform within a strict four-hour working window.
The Challenge: Extreme Tides and Tight Windows
Extreme Scaffolding was commissioned to erect a stable working platform for critical core sampling along the Wapping River Wall. The project presented severe environmental and logistical constraints:
- 7-Metre Tidal Range: The River Thames rises and falls drastically, leaving a restrictive 3 to 4-hour daily working window before the site submerged.
- Restricted Access: All plant and scaffolding materials had to be carefully transported through an active, high-security police car park and hoisted over the river wall.
The Solution: Precision Engineering & Rapid Assembly
Overcoming these tight operational windows required strategic material selection and flawless logistical planning:
- Rapid-Assembly Systems: We selected the Layher Allround System Scaffold, chosen specifically for its high-speed assembly and teardown capabilities to maximise the brief low-tide windows.
- Hydrodynamic Decks: We utilised Layher steel decks featuring integrated drainage holes. This allowed rising tidal water to flow directly through the structure, drastically reducing hydrodynamic lift and pressure on the scaffold.
- Sub-Surface Foundations: The client deployed a mini-digger via boat to level the riverbed. We then established a heavy-duty foundation using timber railway sleepers to prevent sinking.
- Structural Anchoring: The entire structure was rigidly secured to the historic river wall using Gallo Brackets, ensuring absolute stability for the core sampling technicians.
The Result: Zero Disruptions, Maximum Safety
Despite the punishing marine environment, the project was completed on schedule with zero safety incidents. By minimising our footprint in the busy police car park, we ensured smooth local operations while delivering a rock-solid platform that allowed the client to complete their core sampling accurately and safely.
